What belongs on a first teaching bench

Three glass pieces, a way to measure, gloves, and goggles. Add the rest when a method asks for it.

A first bench needs pieces people will actually pick up: a 250 mL beaker, a 250 mL Erlenmeyer, and a 100 mL cylinder. Add a volumetric flask when the course starts making standards. Add tongs before anyone heats a beaker, and a stir bar if there is a plate.

Safety sits on the bench first

Indirect-vent goggles and a box of nitrile gloves should be unwrapped before the glass is. A coat matters when the work can splash. None of that replaces the protective equipment a specific procedure names.

The starter set is those three glass pieces in one carton.
